Looking for a Website Designer in Nigeria? Here Is What to Expect
“Website designer” covers an enormous range in Nigeria — from a student assembling a free template over a weekend to a studio running strategy, design, development and SEO as separate disciplines. Both call themselves designers. The results are not comparable. This page explains what a professional website designer actually does, how to judge one, and what to expect from working with us.
What a Website Designer Actually Does
Visual design is the part clients see, but it sits on top of decisions made much earlier.
- Understanding the business. What you sell, who buys it, what objections they carry, and what action the site should drive.
- Structuring information. Deciding what belongs on which page and in what order, so a visitor reaches the answer they came for without hunting.
- Designing the interface. Layout, typography, colour, spacing and imagery — drafted mobile-first, because that is where your visitors are.
- Designing for conversion. Placing calls to action where intent peaks, reducing form friction, and making contact effortless.
- Building it properly. Clean, fast, secure code that holds up on slow connections and stays editable by a non-technical owner.
- Preparing it to be found. Heading hierarchy, page titles, descriptions, image alt text, internal links and a sitemap.
A designer who only does the third item is a decorator. That is fine if you already have strategy, structure and content sorted — most businesses do not.
Freelancer, Agency or In-House?
| Freelance designer | Design company | In-house hire | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | Lowest | Moderate | Highest ongoing |
| Breadth of skill | Varies sharply | Design, dev and SEO covered | Usually one specialism |
| Availability after launch | Often the weak point | Contracted support | Always available |
| Continuity risk | High if they move on | Lower | Tied to one employee |
| Best suited to | Small, simple sites | Businesses needing results | Large firms shipping constantly |
None is universally correct. A one-page portfolio does not need an agency; a school handling admissions online should not depend on a single freelancer who may be unreachable in September.
How to Judge a Website Designer
Open their portfolio on your phone
Not the case-study screenshots — the live sites. Time how long they take to load on mobile data. If a designer’s own showcased work is slow, yours will be too.
Ask what happens after launch
Who fixes a broken form six weeks later? Is support included, and for how long? Vagueness here is the most reliable predictor of trouble.
Ask who owns what
The domain and hosting should be registered in your business name, and you should hold the logins. This is the single most common way Nigerian businesses lose control of their website.
Ask to see the editing dashboard
If you cannot change your own phone number without paying someone, you have bought a liability.
Check whether they ask you questions
A designer who quotes before understanding your business is quoting for a template. Substantive questions early are a good sign.

Working With Nergy
We run every project through five stages — Discover, Plan, Design, Develop, Launch & Grow. You see the structure and content plan before design begins, and the design before development starts, so there are no expensive surprises late on.
We have delivered more than 40 projects over five years across education, healthcare, retail, hospitality and real estate, and were recognised in 2025 by the Tech Behemoth Awards for web design, e-commerce and WordPress development. Most sites are ready in five to ten working days.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a website designer charge in Nigeria?
Anywhere from a few tens of thousands of naira for a template to well into seven figures for complex custom work. Scope, ownership and support explain most of the difference. See our cost breakdown.
Do I need to provide the content?
Your input on services, pricing and business details is essential, but we help shape and write it. You will not be handed an empty template and left to fill it.
Can you redesign an existing website?
Yes, and we start with an audit so you know whether a rebuild or targeted fixes make more sense.
Do you work with businesses outside Enugu?
Yes — clients across Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Onitsha and elsewhere in Nigeria work with us entirely online.
Will I be able to update the site myself?
Yes. We build on WordPress and include a handover session covering text, images and blog posts.
