How to Choose the Best Website Design Company in Nigeria

Choosing a website design company in Nigeria is difficult for a specific reason: you are buying something you cannot evaluate until after you have paid for it. Portfolios look similar. Everyone claims custom design, SEO and support. The differences only surface months later, usually at the worst moment. Here is how to tell them apart beforehand.

Start With What You Actually Need

Before contacting anyone, answer three questions. They will shape every conversation.

  • What should the website do? Generate enquiries, sell products, take bookings, accept admissions, or simply establish credibility. These require different builds.
  • Who is the visitor? A parent researching schools behaves differently from a procurement officer comparing suppliers.
  • What is the realistic budget? Including annual hosting and maintenance, not just the build.

A company that does not ask you these things in the first conversation is quoting for a template.

The Seven Checks That Matter

1. Open their portfolio on your phone, on mobile data

Not the screenshots — the live websites. Do they load in under three seconds? Is text readable without zooming? Are buttons easy to tap? If a company’s showcased work is slow on a phone, yours will be too. This single test eliminates a surprising number of candidates.

2. Ask who owns the domain and hosting

The correct answer is: you do, registered in your business name, with logins handed to you. Anything else means you can be held hostage later. This is the most common and most damaging trap in the Nigerian market, and it costs nothing to ask about.

3. Ask what happens after launch

How long is support included? What does it cover? What is the response time? Who fixes a broken form in month three, and at what cost? Vague answers here reliably predict silence later.

4. Ask to see the editing dashboard

You should be able to change your phone number, update prices and publish a post without paying anyone. Ask for a walkthrough of the admin area on a site they have built.

5. Check whether SEO is built in or bolted on

Ask specifically: will each page get a unique title and meta description? Will there be a sitemap? Will headings be structured properly? Will images be compressed and given alt text? These are baseline, and a company that treats them as an upsell is telling you something.

6. Ask for a reference you can actually call

Not a testimonial on their website — a client you can speak to. Ask that client one question: what happened after launch? The answer is more informative than any portfolio.

7. Read what you are signing

A written agreement should cover scope, deliverables, timeline, revision rounds, payment schedule, ownership of domain, hosting, files and design, support period, and what happens if either side walks away. No contract is itself the answer to whether you should proceed.

Red flags worth walking away from: a guaranteed number-one Google ranking (nobody can promise this); a quote given before any questions about your business; demanding full payment upfront; refusing to register the domain in your name; no written agreement; and a portfolio of sites that are all offline or all identical.

Freelancer or Company?

Freelancer Design company
Cost Lower Higher
Skill coverage Usually one or two areas Design, development and SEO
After launch Depends entirely on the individual Contracted support
Continuity Project stalls if they become unavailable Team coverage
Good fit for Simple sites, tight budgets Businesses where the site drives revenue

Excellent freelancers exist and plenty of agencies are mediocre. The distinction that matters is not the label — it is whether they answer the seven questions above clearly.

Questions to Ask on the First Call

  • What do you need from me, and by when?
  • How many revision rounds are included, and what counts as a revision?
  • Will you write the content or do I supply it?
  • Who provides photography?
  • What is the payment schedule?
  • What typically delays your projects?
  • Can I see a site you built two years ago that is still running well?

That last one is the best question on the list. Anyone can produce a site that looks good on launch day.

How We Answer These

For transparency, here are our answers. Domain and hosting are registered in your name and handed to you. Support is included with every package. You get a dashboard and a handover session so you can edit content yourself. SEO foundations are built in, never upsold. Pricing is published openly. And we will tell you if you do not need what you are asking for.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I choose a company in my own city?

Not necessarily. Local helps for face-to-face meetings and local SEO knowledge, but process and communication matter more. We work with clients nationwide from Enugu.

How much should I pay upfront?

A deposit is normal and reasonable — commonly half. Full payment before any work begins is not.

What if I do not like the design?

Agree the number of revision rounds in writing beforehand. A good process shows you structure and direction early, so nobody discovers a mismatch after the build.

How do I know if they are any good at SEO?

Search for their own business. If a web design company cannot rank for its own service in its own city, be cautious about their SEO claims.
